There was a big fuss made about the redesigned Xbox One controller when it was first released, with Microsoft insisting that it featured 40 improvements over the Xbox 360 joypad.

Although the public reception was relatively muted, with many considering it only a minor advancement at best, it's still widely considered to have a least a slight edge on the PlayStation 4's DualShock 4.

Why then Microsoft would need a 'hardcore' controller is unclear, but website Neowin implies that it will primarily be aimed at first person shooter and driving games. They even suggest that the new controller could be unveiled as soon as E3 in June.

It's not clear exactly what is meant by a hardcore controller, but presumably it would be something along the lines of the controllers produced by third parties such as Razer and Scuf Gaming.

These tend to be more expensive than a standard gamepad, although presumably Microsoft feels a hardcore gamer would be willing to make that sacrifice.
