Anderhalve week geleden kon je hier op Eigenwereld.nl lezen dat Valve groots inzet op Ubuntu 12.04, want Gabe Newell wil alle Steam gamers porten naar deze Linux distributie. Veel mensen vroegen zich dan ook af waarom die keuze dan ook nu is gemaakt. Daar heeft Newell in dit interview nu zelf antwoord opgegeven. Want Windows 8 is een nachtmerrie voor developers, en Gabe voorspelt zelfs dat als Microsoft zo door gaat hun OS zichzelf de nek omdraait. Vandaar dat er nu naar Linux word gekeken, waar veel (oudere) hardcore gamers gebruik van maken en enkel Windows booten om te gamen.

On Valve's interest in Linux

"The big problem that is holding back Linux is games. People don't realize how critical games are in driving consumer purchasing behavior.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well. It's a hedging strategy. I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space. I think we'll lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people. If that's true, then it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality.
